A Conservative Teacher Needs Help
BasicsProject.org President Nancy Salvato, in an effort to help sustain our efforts (due to a very low number of donations in 2011) has returned to her roots as a 2nd Grade teacher in an inner-city Norfolk, VA, public school. Her goal, to affect critical thinking skills in America's next generation if by only 20 children at a time. She is doing the work Conservatives and Constitutionalists profess needs to be done.

Now it's time for you to do what you know is right.

Mrs. Salvato needs classroom supplies. Please click on the link to make a tax-deductible donation that will go directly for school supplies exclusively in her classroom. These contributions are tax deductible. If you choose to make a small donation to BasicsProject.org by clicking on the PayPal logo on the main page, 25% of those donations will go toward this classroom supply effort.

If you won't help, who will??

The next generation of Americans thanks you.
Goals

Most students enter second grade able to read and write. To what extent they are able to perform these skills and to what degree of difficulty is what differentiates these students from one another and ultimately dictates the forms of instruction employed by the teacher.

The reading goal for each second grader is to become familiar with the text structures for both non-fiction and fiction text, read a variety of genres, and to employ strategies to help them comprehend and read with fluency increasingly difficult levels of text. Students at the primary grade level need to build a solid foundation in order to read for learning at higher grade levels.

The writing goal for each second grader is to become familiar with writing conventions and to utilize these writing conventions independently when constructing a variety of prose.

In math, the goal is for each student to become mentally agile when performing number computations. Second graders will learn how to count back change, a skill in which many cashiers are lacking. Strong mathematical agility provides a foundation on which students build the skills to perform more and more complicated mathematical problems.

I begin the position of 2nd Grade Teacher in January 2012. The teacher who I am replacing has taken many of the materials which she used to supplement those provided by the school district. The classroom currently lacks a library of books for students to choose when working independently. Any available math manipulatives need to be checked out and shared between teachers, which limits their independent use by students to reinforce new and old concepts, and the writing center is barren. Basic items like sentence strips and lined chart paper need to be purchased. Copy paper is a commodity.

Wish List
Writing Center
The classroom I'm taking over has very few supplies to assist in teaching students literacy skills. Items on this list are intended to help students with spelling, reading response, and writing conventions.

I want all students to be engaged in learning, not seated at their desks passively listening. The items I've chosen are designed to keep all students actively participating in their learning.

Through your generous donation, I will be able to create a comprehensive word wall to which students can refer when unsure of how to spell a word. After writing stories, going over writing conventions, looking for word patterns, the chart paper can be hung around the room and students can refer to the lesson when working independently. Students can work with words at their desk while the teacher conducts the lesson. The graphic organizers can be reproduced and used by students when responding to books they have read independently. All of these items will contribute the writing piece of a second grade curriculum.

Math Manipulatives
My 2nd graders can use these soft dice and soft dominoes at math stations where they practice learning number operations. Because they are soft, they won't make a lot of noise or bounce across the classroom floor, which helps alleviate distraction.

Children become more proficient in number operations when they can practice their skills playing games using Dice and Dominoes. For example, Dice Bingo.

The students in my classroom have been using mostly worksheets for math computation exercise. At this age, its extremely important for kids to let them practice their skills while having fun playing a game.

Through your generous donation, my second graders will be able to compute quickly, without having to think about adding or subtracting. This is an important skills and is the foundation on which higher level mathematical problem solving is based.

Items
Hands on Soft Dot Dice (Qty: 1 @ $25.89)
Jumbo Foam Dominoes (Qty: 1 @ $14.79)

Classroom Library
I would like to provide my class of 2nd graders a variety of genre, non-fiction, and fiction books. The list of books I put together addresses a number of different subjects, i.e. math, social studies, science, and genres. All are all written at a level most students can read independently.

I'm excited to include the students in sorting these books by genre, non-fiction and fiction. Afterwards, I plan to place stickers on the books to indicate reading level so students can identify whether the book would be too easy, too hard, or at their comfort zone. Many of the books are chapter books and part of a series so when children find an author they enjoy, we can check out more books by the same author.

The challenge currently facing the students is that they have very few books available in the classroom for use when reading independently. They need a variety and there needs to be enough books that some can be set aside and reintroduced through out the year.

Through your generous donation, the second graders in my class will receive lots of practice reading a variety of genres and in identifying the structural differences in both nonfiction and fiction.
